State Of The Vineyard:
Dormancy & Pruning
Hi everyone, Kiara here!
I wanted to pop on and talk a little big about vineyard maintenance. You may see some changes happening in the vineyard as you visit us 🙂
After harvest vines go into dormancy, conserving energy through the winter. We spend this time focusing on our soil health, ideally growing some cover crops (when mother nature allows), preparing any new blocks for plantings in the spring, and maintenance on the vineyard irrigation.
In February, we start talking about our pruning techniques, and as soon as we see the buds start pushing, we start pruning to encourage vine growth. So far, we have completed Muscat, Viognier, Sangiovese, and Tempranillo. Typically during March, we should see some little pops of green on the arms of the vine marking bud break.
Being in San Diego, our climate fluctuates drastically each season, so we are always keeping tabs on weather predictions and *hopefully* some nice rainy days early on. It’s an awesome time in the vineyard, and things are always changing through the growing season so our estate tours are a great way to keep tabs on what’s going on!
